Home sleep testing

Sleep apnoea is a condition in which impaired breathing during the night reduces your oxygen level, causing damage to virtually every organ in the body. It has been associated with heart disease, cancer, stroke, diabetes, chronic fatigue and allergies.

Procedure

The test is easy to conduct in your own home while sleeping.

Our staff will instruct patients on how to set up and prepare the equipment, which includes a plastic tube that measures breathing from your nose, an oximeter to your finger that measure pulse and oxygen levels and a small recorder is strapped to the chest. The recorder is removed upon waking and returned to the surgery that morning.

Results are available immediately and will be discussed with you at your next consultation with your practitioner.

Who should have this test?

  • Patients who snore or have been told they stop breathing while sleeping
  • Patients with:
    • Hypertension
    • Heart disease
    • Cancer
    • Chronic fatigue
    • Fibromyalgia
    • Diabetes
    • Excessive weight
    • Allergies

Preparation

Avoid doing the test when you have a cold.

Eat what would be a typical meal for you and drink the average amount of alcohol you would consume, to reflect your normal evening routine.

If you normally have a sleeping medication to sleep, take this on the night of your test to get a representative result.
