Carotid intima media thickness (CIMT)

This test provides the most accurate non-invasive assessment of changes to blood vessel health.

By the time heart attacks or strokes develop, blood vessels are already 80-90% blocked. Carotid intima media thickness is the best way of monitoring pre symptomatic blood vessel damage.

Procedure

The CIMT test takes approximately 20 minutes to perform.

An accurate ultrasound measurement of the internal layer of the carotid artery in the right side of the neck is taken. This layer is less than 1mm thick and is measured down to 1/100th of a millimetre.

The initial thickness is a marker for vascular risk, and it can be used as a comparative test over time.

The test is taken with the patient laying down and no discomfort is involved.

Results are available immediately for discussion with Dr Hayter.
